Clash Between East and West
Born in Tunisia, mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb moved with her family to Montreal (Canada) at the age of two. In her LIFE Victoria debut, together with Brian Zeger, director of the vocal department at the Juilliard School in New York, she explores this clash between East and West. It is a reflection on the exotic, the oriental and orientalism through the vision of several French composers inspired by the East, such as Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns, Georges Bizet or Louise Aubert, contrasted with songs rooted in authentic Arabic tradition. Chaieb is earning a rising place in the opera and art song world, where she took her first steps as a member of the Lindemann Young Artist Program at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. This season she will appear at the Canadian Opera Company, the Bayerische Staatsoper and also at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, performing the role of Nefertiti in Philip Glass’s *Akhnaten*. Another debut not to be missed.
