1898: The Loss of the Colonies

This opening recital marks the recital debut of mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, this season’s Carnegie Hall Artist-in-Residence and one of the Metropolitan Opera’s most celebrated singers, joined by pianist Malcolm Martineau, a regular guest of the series. Together, they explore the musical worlds of Manuel de Falla and Xavier Montsalvatge, two composers who, from different perspectives, reflected on Hispanic cultural identity during a period of profound change. The loss of Spain’s last colonies in 1898 marked the beginning of a period of crisis and re-evaluation that profoundly and dramatically shaped the country’s history, leading first to the Tragic Week (1909) and later to the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). Montsalvatge’s songs, especially those inspired by the Caribbean, evoke the cultural ties between the Iberian Peninsula and the Caribbean, while Falla’s music reflects a renewed interest in folk traditions and the search for a distinctive musical language, presented here in celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Songs by Manuel de Falla (1876–1946), Xavier Montsalvatge (1912–2002), and other composers.
