An evening of song without piano? That’s what we’ll experience at soprano Nardus Williams’ debut at LIFE Victoria, in what promises to be one of the most fascinating concerts of the season, alongside Elisabeth Kenny on theorbo. Songs that predate what we now call Lied, in the form of madrigals composed by well-known figures such as Monteverdi or Caccini, and others who deserve to be rediscovered, like Frescobaldi, Kapberger, or Strozzi. This last composer used the art of song in a very modern way, making herself—or at least her invented persona—the central character of her songs, just as most pop singers do today. This is how Elisabeth Kenny explained it in the Wigmore Hall programme notes, where they performed this recital just over a year ago. An evening of emotions before the Lied, showing us that these emotions have not changed at all since the 16th century. Song before the Lied.
