Exhibition “Fontilles. The Hidden City”

From 19 June to 1 November 2026, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site hosts the exhibition “Fontilles. The Hidden City“, an immersive exhibition that recovers the memory of people affected by leprosy and reflects on stigma and social exclusion throughout the 20th century.
The exhibition reconstructs the story of the last residents of the Hospital of Saint Lazarus in Horta, at Can Masdeu, who were transferred in 1961 to the San Francisco de Borja Sanatorium in Fontilles, in the Marina Alta region, following the permanent closure of the Barcelona hospital.
Through objects, photographs, historical documents and audio testimonies, the exhibition brings visitors closer to the everyday lives of the people who lived at Can Masdeu and Fontilles. The exhibition route allows visitors to discover their personal experiences and understand the social consequences of the stigma associated with the disease.
The exhibition includes documentation from the Historical Archive of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, together with materials recovered through the work of the University of Alicante and the Fontilles Foundation.
A proposal that invites visitors to reflect on difference, marginalisation and human dignity through a little-known episode in our recent history.
The exhibition is included in the regular visit.
