Fomento de las Artes y del Diseño has awarded the FAD 2021 medal to the Kálida Foundation. The Board of this institution has decided to award this recognition both for the Foundation’s commitment to design as a tool for improving the well-being of people with cancer and for highlighting the importance of the environment in the care process, taking on the challenge of humanising spaces through design.
The Kālida Foundation was set up in Barcelona in 2016 thanks to the selfless efforts of many people and the strategic impetus of the Nous Cims Foundation and the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Foundation.
The centre is located between the Art Nouveau Site and the new Hospital de Sant Pau. The architect Benedetta Tagliabue designed the building that houses Kàlida Sant Pau, a protective and friendly hexagonal-shaped building, in contrast to the coldness of oncology wards and conceived as a garden pavilion. Patricia Urquiola, the interior designer, created a second, warm and welcoming home in its interior spaces. The garden setting is reflected in its neighbouring architectural project, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, which was also conceived at the time as a therapeutic space for patients at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau by Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
