Conxita Badia: Exile on Her Lips

The legacy of Conxita Badia, one of the leading figures of Catalan art song, resonates throughout this programme performed by Mercedes Gancedo, Ferran Bardolet and Pedro Pardo. During the years of exile following the Spanish Civil War (1936–39), Badia kept the Catalan language and its musical heritage alive across the Atlantic. Her conception of singing, deeply rooted in poetry and the expressive power of words, left a lasting mark on later generations. Victoria de los Ángeles inherited this legacy and brought it to the world’s foremost concert stages. A devoted interpreter of the art song repertoire and its intimate expressive world, she made the Lied and the mélodie privileged spaces for artistic communication, always with extraordinary sensitivity to the text, sharing with Badia works by Enric Granados, Pau Casals and Eduard Toldrà. This programme creates a dialogue between that legacy and contemporary creation by also presenting songs by Pedro Pardo set to poems written by Victoria de los Ángeles herself, premiered at LIFE Victoria in 2019.
