Some exiles cross borders, while others inhabit memory, living within each composer and their lives. In this recital, Daniel Bertomeu explores three ways of understanding that distance: the journey as discovery, memory as refuge, and loss as transformation. In Après une lecture de Dante, Franz Liszt transforms pilgrimage into a spiritual experience that transcends physical travel. Frederic Mompou’s Scènes d’enfants portray a childhood recalled with the delicacy of memory, as though time itself were another form of exile. Finally, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2 unfolds a world of extraordinary intensity, permeated by nostalgia and the search for a unique musical voice that the composer retained even after his forced departure from his native Russia—a true physical exile. This piano recital also marks Daniel Bertomeu’s debut at LIFE Victoria and introduces a musician who, at just seventeen years of age, promises to be one of the season’s greatest discoveries.
