In 1937, in Barcelona, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, the editor and critic Josep Janés published his poetry collection Combat del somni, dedicated “Sonets a Maria Victòria, que va morir amb el seu somni” (“Sonnets to Maria Victòria, who died with her dream”). The collection is divided into two parts: the first six sonnets were written in 1934 and the remaining fourteen in 1936, when Janés was twenty-three years old, after Maria Victòria was found dead in her bed one morning.
In 1941, after the war had ended, Frederic Mompou set five of these poems to music. In 1944, at her debut at the Palau and at just twenty-one years of age, Victoria de los Ángeles premiered the now celebrated Damunt de tu, només les flors (“Above You, Only the Flowers”), a piece that accompanied her throughout her life and aroused the admiration of composers such as Francis Poulenc.
Following this musical tradition, LIFE Victoria has commissioned a new Combat del somni, in this case from Joan Magrané, which will receive its world premiere in our season, performed by Montserrat Seró, this season’s artist-in-residence, and Marta Puig, artist-in-residence for the 2023–24 season.
