Soprano Jeanine De Bique and pianist Aaron Wajnberg make their LIFE Victoria debut with this programme that invites us on a journey through dreams—not only as nocturnal apparitions, but as profound expressions of desire, faith, beauty and loss. Music, like dreams, transports us to places reason often cannot reach. Henry Purcell’s The Blessed Virgin’s Expostulation gives voice to the disturbing nightmare of a mother who has lost her child: a vision filled with anguish and hope that breaks the boundary between the sacred and the human. The songs of André Previn, with texts by Toni Morrison —an author deeply rooted in themes of memory, loss and identity— lead us into the dreams of a contemporary woman. Meanwhile, Les illuminations is itself a poetic dream: imaginary cities, scenes of royalty, restless seas and unreal lovers. Rimbaud dreams with his eyes open, and Britten transforms this lyrical delirium into a sound architecture of great expressive power. To conclude, traditional Caribbean songs connect us with another kind of dream: that of collective memory, of the land, of childhood, ritual and the body.
