Richard Wagner’s ideas about what the operatic spectacle or Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) should be were so precise that they led him to conceive a specific theatre for this purpose, sponsored by Ludwig II of Bavaria. This dream of Wagner, which became the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, opened its doors to present for the first time the four operas of Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) between 13 and 17 August 1876. To mark the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of this mythical theatre on the green hill, the Festival has organised a series of recitals at Wahnfried, the home of Richard and Cosima Wagner, where baritone Birger Radde, a regular at the Bayreuth Festival, and Julius Drake will present this same recital in collaboration with LIFE Victoria. Together, they will explore Wagner’s influence on composers contemporary to the maestro, such as Franz Liszt, as well as on French post-romantics like Henri Duparc or Camille Saint-Saëns, and German composers such as Hans Pfitzner or Richard Strauss. Wagner’s dream, one hundred and fifty years later.
