Dreams of Peace and Freedom
One of Britain’s most renowned tenors in the world of lieder, Ian Bostridge, makes his long-awaited debut at LIFE Victoria alongside Julius Drake, one of the festival’s most frequent pianists. This well-established duo, which has already delivered truly legendary recitals and recordings, will offer a programme commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten, one of the greatest composers in history. The cycle The Holy Sonnets of John Donne was composed in 1945 by Britten after witnessing the horrors of the recently liberated Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen, where he performed a concert. It was premiered by his life partner and tenor, Peter Pears, at Wigmore Hall in November 1945, and is based on the Holy Sonnets by the metaphysical poet John Donne (1572–1631). The duo will complete the recital with a first part dedicated to Franz Schubert, featuring lieder that share the same atmosphere of reflection: dreams of peace and freedom.
