Dreams of Queens and Commoners
After taking part in the Victoria de los Ángeles Centenary Gala at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 2023, soprano Sabina Puértolas makes her debut at LIFE Victoria alongside one of the festival’s most frequent pianists, Rubén Fernández Aguirre, who has performed every season since its creation. With this programme, they present the work of the Navarrese composer Emilio Arrieta, who, although best known for his zarzuela Marina, also composed songs and was a member of the “bella armata armonica” —in Donizetti’s words— having studied at the Milan Conservatory. In the first part they will perform songs by the composer that move between delicacy and melancholy. The second part features the cantata Los cisnes en Palacio, which tells the story of the love affair between Emilio Arrieta and Queen Isabella II of Bourbon. This piece was commissioned by Fernández Aguirre from Albert García Demestres to mark the bicentenary of Arrieta’s birth and premiered at Bilbao’s Teatro Arriaga in December 2021. Dreams of monarchs and commoners, but ultimately, struggles and dreams.
