The Voice of Casals
Cellist Roger Morelló Ros, in his debut at the Festival, pays tribute to the master Pau Casals as both an artist and a humanist. The selection of works in this program reflects the musical tastes and the most relevant composers for Casals, starting with the emblematic suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, cello studies that Casals unearthed to transform them into concert pieces, and the Suite for solo cello by his disciple Gaspar Cassadó. Additionally, with “Les voix humaines” by Marin Marais, looking to the past, Morelló aims to continue Pau Casals’ legacy by including commissioned works by Elisenda Fábregas and Marc Migó in homage to his figure and his homeland. The artistic proposal also seeks to highlight Casals’ human side, who gave voice to the exiles of the Spanish Civil War by silencing his cello in the face of fascism. A voice still present.
