Claim and Freedom

With this second program in LIFE Victoria, violinist Elisa Scudeller and pianist Miquel Esquinas aim to make a statement of principles. The first part is dedicated to the recognition of female composers, starting with Clara Wieck Schumann, who has recently entered the major lieder repertoire despite being a famous virtuoso in her time, overshadowed by Robert Schumann’s fervor. They will continue with “Deux morceaux” by Lili Boulanger, a talent cut short too early by her premature death from the Spanish flu. Finally, Alicia de Larrocha, who lends her name to the piano series, will be represented by a piece she composed in her youth.

The second part is a tribute to freedom, beginning with a sonata by Francis Poulenc dedicated to Federico García Lorca in 1943, who was assassinated by fascists in 1936. The concert will close with the fifth movement of “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” (Quartet for the End of Time) by Olivier Messiaen, premiered in 1941 in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. A very pertinent reflection proposed by this young, established duo.

Performers:

  • Miquel Esquinas, piano
  • Elisa Scudeller, violin
