\n The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Foundation<\/a><\/strong> traces its origins back to 1401, with the creation of the Hospital de la Santa Creu, which resulted from the merger of six small hospitals belonging to the city and the Cathedral Chapter. The new hospital, located in what is now the Raval district, was governed by the Molt Il\u00b7lustre Administraci\u00f3 (MIA), comprising two canons of the Cathedral Chapter and two prominent citizens appointed by the Consell de Cent, the predecessor of Barcelona City Council. Its role was to manage and administer the Hospital, which was supported by alms, royal privileges, bequests and the income they generated.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n By the end of the 19th century, advances in medicine and population growth had rendered the Hospital de la Santa Creu obsolete. Around the same time, the Catalan banker Pau Gil, who died in Paris, left part of his estate for the construction of a new hospital in Barcelona dedicated to Sant Pau. Following a series of negotiations, the administrators of the Santa Creu and Gil’s executors agreed to build a new hospital complex that would bring the two institutions together. The commission was entrusted to Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner, one of the leading figures of Catalan Modernisme. The foundation stone was laid in 1902, and construction continued until 1930, when the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau was officially opened.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n The composition of the MIA remained unchanged from the 15th century until 1990, when the Government of Catalonia joined as a full member, undertaking to build a new hospital as a contribution to the Foundation’s endowment. Since then, the MIA has comprised two representatives of Barcelona City Council, two representatives of the Cathedral Chapter and two representatives of the Government of Catalonia.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In 2009, the new Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau opened at the northern end of the Modernista complex. The transfer of healthcare activity made it possible to begin restoring the buildings designed by Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner as part of a new project.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Today, the restored pavilions are home to various organisations that develop projects with a major social impact in the fields of innovation, health, sustainability and culture. At the same time, the Foundation runs a cultural programme devoted to promoting the heritage value of the monumental complex and the historical legacy of the institution itself.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n The Foundation has remained faithful to its centuries-old history while responding to society’s new challenges. In accordance with its foundational purposes, it supports the healthcare and research activities of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and promotes a range of social projects. It is also responsible for maintaining and improving its heritage, which includes the former Modernista hospital, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.\n <\/p>\n\n
